long rifle and shot gun. >> what is the number of ambulances you will require? >> they are not giving us a number. >> hook and ladder. medical emergency. >> good morning everyone. we appreciate you joining us on this very sad morning. it is great to have steve and brian here with me. it is a terrible morning, but we do have more information to impart to you. so many people want to know how this can happen in newtown connecticut. we have information about the shooter and his history. >> let's look at the cover of the tabloids in the city. america weeps. the president of the united states spread a couple of tears in the briefing room yesterday. slaughter of the innocence and a picture you saw a lot of

yesterday from the patch -- rather the b in new town where the police officer leads the children single file out of sandy hooks school. >> so many horrific things but the worst there are 20 kids dead between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. there were clues he was capable of doing this. >> there will be an update at 8:00 this morning with authorities. >> peter doocy is live with the details. >> tell us what you have learned overnight. >> allison, we learned that the medical examiner's office has been working all night long inside sandy hook elementary school. they are trying to have the 20 children and 6 adults who were murdered inside yesterday during school identified by today. the killer who carried out the

sick triem adam lanza murdered his mother before he came here. most of the deceased were found in two classrooms at a school most parents thought was secure. >> sandy hook school caller is indicating she thinks someone is shooting in the building. >> we know tlae of the guns used yesterday were legally purchased adam lanza's mother who did become his first victim. adam lanza's father and brother were questioned and cleared yesterday but not clear still is a motive and not easy is trying to deal with what happened in this quiet connecticut town. >> are you trying to find your

child? >> no, my girlfriend's daughter who is my baby-sitter. her and my little daughter are like best friends. they told us if you can't find your children they are dead in the building. >> governor dan malloy said evil visited this community yesterday from everything we have heard and seen he was right. back to you in new york. >> peter, before you go there was a report by another media outlet in the 10:00 hour last night that they were calling the parents in to identify the bodies of their children. have you heard that? >> the reports we have heard are that the police set up a makeshift morgue inside the school and they photographed all of the children around they were showing the parents photographs of their children to identify

them. >> okay. >> they want to reconstruct what happened and it's a pain staking process. they are only going to have one shot at it to find out what took place. who is the suspect? >> he did it. he is the shooter. >> he is adam lanza. he is 20-years old. we do know this, it seems he is thought to be by neighbors by family members either mildly autistic or a little bit some what off they say. according to one of his former classmates and who happens to be a neighbor timothy dalton, as horrible as this was, i can't say i am surprised. burn in hell adam. >> and yet there are lots of conflicting reports at this point about who he is. his brother who at one time there was some conclusifusion d the day whether it was adam or ryan lanza. there was an id of ryan.

his brother was at hoe boek ken in new york. his brother safdz autistic or had as beas burger syndrome. he has been described as a genius. he has been described as an honor student been described as a tech geek, a computer nerd. >> a gamer. >> into technology having game parties. >> a picture of him is emerging. some people describe him as remote but it's hard to get a handle on exactly what his personality issue was. >> there was the -- this information that it was ryan lanza but it turned out to be adam because adam had his brother's id in his pocket may have been used for a fake id. the brothers had not spoken or seen each other in a couple years. last saw him in 2010.

i don't know how much good information we will get about the shooter. >> divorced in 2009 and separated 2008. the mom is living in newtown and the dad is living in new jersey. >> of course he killed his brother before taking her car and driving to the school. we have more on that chronology as well. >> which were all obtained legally. >> his father and older brother ryan who was initially mistaken as his brother adam the gunman. he was briefly cuffed. what do we know about the family? >> we can tell you quite a bit of information. we are standing in front of the building that is the home of the shooter's brother 24-year-old ryan lanza. we were here yesterday and last night and watched the cops

rolled up at about 10:00 last night. a completely different scene yesterday. all sorts of confusion and chaos. some of that stemming from reports that there was someone murdered inside the apartment building and it was even possibly the father of the brothers peter lanza. we have a reliable source in the fbi telling us the father was questioned by fbi agents last -pnight. that source also telling us ryan yesterday afternoon did not know about everything coming here seeing his apartment encircled police he was handcuffed and taken away. the reason for some of this confusion may have stepped because the shooter adam lanza was carrying ryan lanza's id. residents in hoe coboken are re on edge thinking a mass murderer may have been living among them. it was scary swung that

could act like this is living amongst you, you are walking probably in the same neighborhood. i don't know the person personally but obviously probably crossed paths from time to time. that's awful. >> the fbi says the brother and the father have been cleared and possibly may be on their way back to connecticut. that's where peter lanza lived he lived with his mother -- father in stanza. mother has been cooperating with police and has mentioned his brother adam possibly did have a personality disorder and mild autism. we thank you very much. not too long ago the principal at sandy hook school sent a letter to parents saying we are installing a new security system. going forward what you have to do is buzz the doorbell at the

front of the only access point in the school, the front door. all of the other doors awere going to be locked. according to a report in the new york times apparently this shooter add bam lanza went up to the -- adam lanza the principal says this is nancy lanza's son. i recognize him. it was a couple minutes later she confronted him in the hall and he shot her dead. >> here's why there's a little problem with the story. she was supposedly in a conference with the school psychologist and a parent. at that time is the principal the one who has to hit a button and queue somebody in. nancy the mom wasn't working there. i heard a report she had stopped working in order to deal with adam full-time. >> that was a picture of the principal. >> i think what they do is have

a surveillance camera they buzz them in if they look relatively normal and he wasn't wearing the ski mask or whatever it was at that time. let's talk about the stories of heroism and profound caring that the teachers took over inside the school when the gun fire broke out. there's a story of a first grade teacher katelyn royd they were doing something called morning meeting. i am sure you know this. kids you talk about what your day is going to be like. during morning meeting they heard gun shots. the teacher didn't know wafz happening she knew something bad was happening. she barricaded her door with whatever sort of rolling cart was available. there's a bathroom in the third grade classroom. she took her 14 kids into the bathroom and locked the bathroom door. some of the kids had to get up on the toilet and she told them you need to be extremely quiet in here, something bad is happening. let's listen to her.

>> one of my students on top of the toilet. i just knew had we had to get i there. i was telling them you are going to be okay. you are going to be all right. i pulled the book shelf before i closed the door in front of it. i turned the lights off. >> did you tell them to be quiet. did you worry about one of them -- >> i told them we had to be absolutely quiet. i was afraid if he did come in if he heard us he would start shooting the door. i said we have to be absolutely quiet. i said there are bad guys out there now we need to wait for the good guys. i wanted us to beeokay. i am so saddened that there are people who in this situation are not okay. my heart goes out to any one who knew them and was part of their lives. i can't image. >> you can't image. >> there are also stories of heroism, a school janitor

realized what was happening ran up and down the halls telling people lock your doors from the inside. >> it is hard to image how this could be worse but apparently it could be worse if the teachers hadn't taken action. you never know how you are going to respond in one of these life altering situations. >> two classrooms 3 minutes. 12 minutes after the hour. we will be here the next 4 hours and have continuing coverage through out the day. straight ahead your child didn't need to be at the scene of the shooting to be traumatized just hearing about it can be traumatic. as a parent what do you do? what do you advise? dr. mark seigel here live next. tragedy and how can we help all children cope with the violence? dr. mark seigel is associate professor at medical center and the truth about he cepidemic of peer. >> let's start with the kids at the school. it will have a lifelong impact on this. >> that child we showed had tremendous courage the wafzable to walk out there and did what he was told to do. his parents should be so proud of him. 77 percent of the kids that are in school will have post traumatic stress disorder and 35 percent of the kids in the neighborhood living in the neighborhood. >> generally you can figure out how many will have acute symptoms from people who have been through something like this. >> it will interfere with their

play ks they are going to figure out something happened in advance that caused it to happen. they are going to become grace i have at play, sad at play. may have trouble sleeping. may have trouble with depression. this goes on for months. therapy works on this. behavioral therapy works which targets the trauma and helps kids work through it. >> obviously that's the less direct kind of trauma. it's trauma nonetheless. i have friends from all over the country calling knowing we live in this general area they are devastated people can't pull themselves away from the tv they can't stop crying. >> i have two points about this. fission of all people have to return to their regular lives they can't ob success even on our reports. they can't teach their kids to worry. we have to roll model our kids to be calm. let's teach the kids empathy for

those involved. empathy about victims care about the people there and not talk about our own schools which statistically remain enormously safe. we are looking at should we ramp up security. these tragedies are rare let's talk about how courage uses the same certainties of the brain. >> you show it yourself. if they see you as calm they bacall am. we have to be role models for our children. >> today turn off the television if your children are around. we never give that recommendation. if kids are around you put the newspapers aside, you put the radii off you put the tv off and you try to be as compassionate with them as possible. >> answer their questions. they are going to ask you about this today. answer them. don't dtry to shy away from it

>> sandy hook elementary school had recently updated security measures like locking the front door and requiring visitors to ring a doorbell to get inside then somebody would ring them in. still the unthinkable happened yesterday. what should schools be doing right now to prepare and protect their students? harry hauk is a former security st officer and is here to talk about this. >> we don't know what the action plan was but we know they recently installed the new doorbell. >> a doorbell is nice but in a situation like this you basically need the emergency action plan. this is a special plan you set up in the event an attack like this occurs this way your people know how to react. i saw a lot of people on tv especially the teachers that were talking about how they

reacted when something happens. it's just like a fire drill. putting in an emergency action plan together is key. they need to know how to react when something like this occurs. the teachers need to be trained. the rest of the school staff needs to be trained you have to work in conjunction with the police department. >> sounds like they had the right idea. the janitor selflessly ran up and down the halls telling the teachers to lock the doors from the inside. apparently somebody keyed the intercom the public address system from the office so people could hear the screams and some shooting as well and perhaps that actually saved some lives. that probably definitely did. the first two minutes is the most important time in an active shooter attack. that's when most of the damage occurred. i was listening to some of the radio transmissions from the police department yesterday and

seems like by the time the police officers already arrived the shooter had already killed himself. >> do you think schools should have armed guards? >> yes, without a doubt. we have them here in new york. it would probably take nothing for one police to be around the school area between 9 and 3:30 in the afternoon. >> just a local police officer. >> that would be part of the his duty. >> not to stand in front of the school. ideally you would want a security person who is in plain clothes because even if you had somebody armed in the uniform the akty shooter would know who he is and shoot him first. >> it is a scary situation we would have to have armed guards in our schools. in this particular town i have been up there it's idealic beautiful. it's the last place you would think something would happen. >> we live in a different world today. people need to understand that.

>> the ter tore that took place was so brief so rapid. a tragic school shooting here's how it unfolded. let's take a look back right now. >> doesn't even seem real. it just does not seem like it's even possible. >> there are no words. sheer terror and a sense of immediate urgency and to get to your child and to be there to protect them. >> i have an emergency phone call there has been a shooting but they didn't say where. the schools are on lock down. so immediately after that i got a text from ap i think that says there is a shooting at the school at sandy hooks on dickinson street. i said oh my god that's sandy hook. i left went to the school. there was hysterical moms i knew. i said what's going on? the principal is dead and the children came out with blood.

>> we are coping. we are still trying to find out what's going on. it's a little nerve wracking to see as you can tell behind us. we have a few more cars pulling in at this time. how many shooters how manniy people are injured. >> she was in a small class a-reading group. they started hearing bangs and her teacher who i am so grateful for, there was just a small group, they rushed the kids into the bathroom and they locked the door and they just told the children that it was hammering and tried to keep them calm. and the next thing i know because it's very hard to get a complete story, the next thing i know is that the police came in and they were knocking on the door to be let out of the classroom and when they were, she had seen class and blood.

one child was covered in blood but i understand that child is safe. >> later on she was talking about how -- while she was walking down the hallway the police told them to close their eyes. obviously it was a very sensitive scene. she said she heard gun shots and -- actually what she told me was in the beginning the intercom came on and she heard a scream on the intercom around the school. the intercom went immediately off then. i am not sure the specifics how the school got locked down but she heard screams on the intercom and gun shots. >> nothing makes sense like this. it is senseless. no. it doesn't. our hearts are with everybody. everybody. every parent. every mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, brother, sister for all of the children. >> everybody seems to be doing okay. a couple friends we haven't been able to get in touch with them.

we hope everything is okay with them. >> what a day yesterday was. that last picture of the little boy walking out in the police officer's coat. in that i heard one young man talk a little bit about how somebody in the office apparently pushed down the button for the intercom. we were talking to harry of the new york police department of that. perhaps -- we don't know who it was. it may have been the principal. whoever it was pushed it down long enough so the entire school heard the commotion at the front of the school. everybody heard on the intercom. that may saved some lives because immediately teevenacher heard that and started locking doors. >> it is worth the -- it is worth the damage done then you get to hear the horror as it unfolds on all of the speakers in the classrooms. you react to it but you take it in. >> it allows them to bare krica themselves in the school. the principal woman 47 years

old, dawn hshgs oshhoksburing s is incredibly dedicated passionate educator. she had a twitter stream. she would send out messages all of the time about the things she was excited about at the school, the way she was excited to welcome new kindergartners into the class. i think the quote was, i am so excited they have a lifetime of learning ahead of them. she -- one of the things she noted for today is she installed this new security system. the way it works in most public schools there's a camera at the front door, the door is locked and you have to buzz even as a parent you buzz and someone gives a visual identification in the room in the office and buzzes you in. of course when people are busy and you are not expecting a mass murderer, people probably absent mindedly buzz people in all of the time. we don't know what the situation was yesterday. obviously we can assume the

gunman wasn't wearing his combat camo head gear when he buzzed. but this just happens all of the time. you think it's a parent. also we had heard that the principal recognized him adam lanza somehow because his mother was connected by the school. >> that's by the new york times. i have not heard that other places. i give credit to the principal. when you hear gun shots a lot of people would say duck and cover she and the sipsychiatrist the school psychiatrist who was going to retire at the end of the year walked out toward the gun shots then she was killed. what kind of person was she? we mentioned the tweets. she would be something that would be silly. i remember principals were far removed from kids. >> they were scary. >> she would dress in silly outfits on wednesdays they would have whacky wednesdays. they would dress in a funny crazy way. she was somebody they could relate to that was pumped up to

do her job. a lot of kids were asking their moms how is the principal. >> it was her idea to install the door buzzer. and here is -- alley was talking a little bit about the safety drill. here is a tweet she sent out on october 17th. sandy -- safety first at sandy hook. it is a beautiful day for our annual evacuation drill. they had included an image of that. when it was time for the installation of the new doorbell sent out a letter to the hair rents and said quote please understand with nearly 700 students and over 1,000 parents representing 500 families most parents will be asked to show identification. that is you ring the doorbell you might have to show some identification. as he hawe detailed apparently recognized the shooter because that was nancy's son.

years ago when we started having these mass shootings. it should have been done when gabby giffords was shot. she described a conversation she had prior to election day with white house chief of staff jack lieu in which she vowed to revive the issue. i said jack i know the president is going through an election i am telling you after the election i am coming out full force. i was just giving the white house a heads off the gloves are off on my side. i was going to do everything i possibly could if that meant embarrassing everybody mccarthy said that's what i would do. >> in his weekly saturday address president obama mostly repeated his sament of yesterday. he kept his emotions in check. he correctly announced the name of the town in connecticut and added another city to the litany of them he had in friday's remarks. >> elementary school in newtown, a shopping mall in oregon, a house of worship in wisconsin. a movie theater in colorado, countless street corner rs in places like chicago and

philadelphia. any of these neighborhoods could be our own. so we have to come together and we are going to have to take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this from happening regardless of politics. >> what exactly that meaningful action should be the president has not yet specified. >> thank you. >> mike bloomberg going after the president for not going after gun control. he said that yesterday. >> a lot of people are starting to talk about guns. today is not the day. wait until monday. >> we should have a national dialogue at some point. >> let's just figure out what happened. why did he go to those classrooms. >> if there ever is an answer. we have a lot of information to share with you. did the sandy hook shooter just snap or were there warning signs that were missed? >> sandy hooks school caller isnd indicating she thinks somebody is shooting in the

>> all right. this morning we are still learn being the information about the gunman who carried out the horrific crime, the worse mass shooting at a school second worse in our nation's history. what may have set him off? why yesterday? why then? why the weapons he used? let's ask former homicide detective rod wheeler. rod, first off inside the mind of the killer adam evidently according to his brother autistic, others say just emotionally disturbed painfully shy, mom may have quit her job teaching at that school in order to spend some time with him. we are still trying to make heads or tails of this. how do you put the puzzle

together? >> the police department, the investigators there are trying to figure out the answers to those exact same questions. what was the correlation between this guy, that school and yesterday other than the mother? we know that the mother of the shooter worked at the school. but that's not enough to spark a person to commit the horrific act that he committed yesterday. so i think there is going to be a lot more information that we are going to learn over the next couple of days. the other thing is the amount of ammunition this guy had. in some of the reports they are saying that the police recovered over 100 shell casings at that school. if that is the case. this guy came prepared. as we all know he was supposedly wearing a bulletproof vest. he didn't wake up yesterday morning and say i didn't do this. it was a planned event. >> it was his mom's guns they were all registered and legal. the rifle he had in the car was evidently used for big game hunting. here is a quote from his

neighbor and classmate tim dalton not his friend. as horrible as this was i can't say i am surprised. burn in hell adam. >> so we see all of these red flags. are there other people that could say that about potential assassins or is is this a guy that was capable of this? >> he was capable of it. he did it. there had to be warning signs. the friend of the shooter knew about some of these warning signs because that's why he made the statement that he did. you know the police and the fbi right now are in three different states interviewing associates relatives of the shooter. you know what they are trying to find out right now? they are trying to find out more about this guy's history even if it was a mental issue. they are trying to find this out to try to determine what was it that was the spark that ignited him yesterday.

>> the aurora shooting people say he was off his own therapist saying they were relatively scared for him. as we find out this guy was a danger and scared everybody in his neighborhood in the future how can we stop the next multiple shooting before it happens without going against people's freedom. >> i don't know if you heard in minnesota on active shooter response training to a major company. you can't worry about profiling you have to speak up to somebody. at the minimum notify the police department so we can check these individuals out. you don't want it to be a day too late. i wish i would have spoke up you don't want someone to say. >> if there's medication he is supposed to be on at 20-years old there's nothing we can do to
